About Inspiral Africa

What’s in a name?

Inspiral Africa Logo Text Below BlackThe name of our travel service stems from a combination of the terms; ‘Inspiring’, ‘Inspirational’ and ‘Spiral’ and ‘In a spiral’.

Africa is a continent  in which you can get inspired and touched by the scent of early morning dew in the bush, the call of the go-away bird that wakes you up in the morning, the deep knowledge of nature you read in the eyes of a Samburu warrior in those two seconds of eye contact, the philosophising with fellow travelers during your sundowners overlooking the sunset on the plains. It can come from the vastness of the savannah, the intense blue of the Indian Ocean and the snows on the peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro, which can all take your breath away as you stop to admire their beauty.

Everybody who travels to Africa creates his or her own interesting story in this ancient, inspirational, land and can get inspired to travel more and to discover more in life.

The spiral is not a symbol of stagnation but rather of change, progression, and development. It is a sacred symbol that reminds us of our evolving journey in life. When used as a personal talisman, the spiral helps consciousness to accept the turnings and changes of life as it evolves.

Inspiral Africa would like to be a part of this evolving journey in life through inspiring you to absorb Africa during your stay here and in turn helping you to create your own African story that would inspire others to make their own  journey back to the cradle of mankind.

Tim Rendell’s African Story

I was born in Ngara Hospital, Nairobi in September 1972. My father is half English, half Welsh and my mother is part Ndorobo, part Kikuyu and part Maasai. Mixed race couples in Kenya in the 70s were still quite rare so I have always felt that my parents were very brave to, because of the love they had for each other, begin a story that was very much outside of the norm.

I like to think that my love for travel and nomad instinct might come from the fact that I have some Ndorobo and Masai genes or it might simply be that having an expat, engineer father meant that by the time I was six I had already had the experience of living in Eldoret, Nandi Hills and Nairobi in Kenya and Ghana and Nigeria in West Africa. I had also visited Germany, Ethiopia and England with my parents. Since then my wanderlust spirit has brought me to quite a few far flung places in Europe, Africa, America and Asia, where I have worked as a diving instructor, English teacher and lodge manager.

A few years ago, I married my Dutch wife in the middle of the wilderness with a Nile crocodile as our witness. From that memorable moment onwards we started to create our own African stories together. Inspiral Africa was founded on the idea of showcasing the amazing experiences we have had so far in the most exhilarating, of the beaten track and remote areas that this ancient continent has to offer.

And we would now like to invite you to create your own unique African story with us.

Tim Rendell is the founder and owner of Inspiral Africa.

I am not African because I was born in Africa but because Africa was born in me – Kwame Nkrumah

Conny Assies-Bosma, guide

My African journey started in 1993 when my husband and I first came to Kenya. I instantly lost my heart to Africa and I started to take pictures, to treasure the special moments because I wanted to hold on to them.

In 1998 we moved to Ghana, another colourful and inspiring country. So far we had really enjoyed living and traveling on smaller trips in Africa. This time we decided to do something epic and drove from Accra to Timbuktu, and it was on this trip that Africa was born in me…

We were fortunate to return to Kenya in 2013 and my journey continued again. I became a professional photographer and was inspired again by the beautiful people, their different cultures, the stunning wildlife and the amazing landscapes. With Nairobi as our base we travelled through different countries in Africa. One time we drove by car from Nairobi to Johannesburg and my life was so enriched by meeting beautiful people and amazing wildlife in a variety of landscapes in a way that I never could have imagined.

Africa has enriched my life so much that I want to use the power of photography to tell compelling real-life stories and show the treasures of wildlife and landscapes. I like to catch special moments in life and hope to enrich other people’s lives with my photography by creating honest, pure pictures that express emotions and the reality of life. It is also my passion to share my extensive knowledge of Africa with others so that they too can create their own African story. That is why I love to accompany clients on Inspiral Africa trips as their guide.
